I wanted to wait a while before writing a review in order to get a better evaluation. I have had the Sage mahogany live for 6-7 months now and I play it almost every day. This is my second Orangewood (I bought an Oliver junior a couple years ago to keep a small guitar at my office). In the first couple of weeks I agonized about returning it, even getting the return shipping label sent to me. My concern was that the finish had a few imperfections, I wondered if the workmanship at the nut was good enough, and I had to crank the truss rod to the max to lower the action. The Oliver junior seemed to be perfect which made me wonder about the Sage. I looked at several other guitars to compare the nut, and only the super high-end ones (~$1700+) were better. Now that I've had it a while, I'm very satisfied and happy to have kept it. I own 7 guitars and the Sage is upper tier. The sound quality is very good, including the electronics. I prefer the projection of mahogany to the brighter sounds of other wood; mahogany ages well and I think it is sounding even better over time. I will eventually have it professionally set up to get the bridge lowered so I don't have to max out the truss rod, and to improve the action. That said, I've been playing it for half a year without the professional set up and I really, really like it. I own Fender, PRS, Taylor (GS Mini, so not exactly equivalent to the Sage), Yamaha, and a few others. The PRS and Sage are my go-to at the moment. Bottom line: it sounds good, looks good, and is a good value. If it somehow was out of my possession any time soon, I would get another.
Thanks for your honest review, John. We are so glad you gave the Sage Mahogany a chance!
This was a gift for my son. He was and is very happy with it. Says it has great sound
Thank you for your purchase and review, Dawn. We are so happy that your son enjoys his new Sage Mahogany Live.
It sounds good, but it doesn’t project naturally like my Taylor! It handles well though and the electronics work very well!!! I’m going to keep it!!!
Coming from years of playing entry level but very playable Yamaha F310, I expected less in terms of playability and overall comfort. And I was surprised to find out that even with the slightly wider nut width, Sage feels really comfy and I had no issues adjusting to it. I think that special neck profile helps here. It's just great. To put it in perspective, I had a lot of issues with Martin D28 (same nut width as Sage, different neck profile).
The action height is okay right out of the box, although I may be looking to slightly lower it with the help of local luthier.
Ernie Ball strings sound okay, but I'm going to replace them with Elixir bronze nanoweb soon, as I like their slick feel. Ernie Ball strings do feel a bit slow for my preference.
The pickup system is great, really appreciate this feature of mixing in the sound from the built-in mic.
The hardcase is also nice, feels very solid and well-built.
Really happy that I didn't go for the big name and ultimately chose Orangewood. The guitar traveled all the way to Ukraine so it took a couple of long weeks for me to get it, but it was 1000% worth it.
Overall: 11 out of 10. Thank you Orangewood, you rock :)
I bought a Mason Live last year and loved it. I wanted to upgrade to a solid body after trying an overpriced entry level Taylor 214 because it was the only one that sounded marginally better than the Mason. (I also tried a Martin 000 and a PRS Angelus.) The plan was to wait for this to go on sale for July 4th, but the allure of the Martin name and a guitar store sale led to my buying a Martin GPC 10. BIG MISTAKE. It sounded ok but it needed a setup badly and it didn't come with the mounted tuner as advertised. I was so unhappy that I ordered the Sage as soon as I saw Orangewood's sale email. I am 100% happy with the Sage. The guitar is gorgeous compared to the plain Martin. The hard shell case is far superior to the gig bag that came with the Martin. It was set up and ready to play right out of the box. Needless to say, the Martin was sent back. I should've never bought it... Orangewood offers far more guitar for the money.
