I have no idea how they do it for the money. Quality binding and purfling, good finish, ebony bridge and bridge pins, TUSQ nut and saddle, vintage Grover-style tuners, abalone inlays down the back of beautiful solid Pau Ferro back and sides.
This guitar would be a good deal at $2,000 USD when you compare it to the other stuff on the market, at the current price it's practically robbery.
Tonally speaking it's very bright and somewhat lacks bass, but if you go play very expensive guitars you'll find that's actually quite common for spruce tops made from hard body back and sides (rosewood, maple, walnut, pau ferro, etc.). I personally like a really bright guitar because on recordings guitars always end up sounding darker and bassier than in person (due to proximity effect). To my ear it sounds like a high-end Martin D-35, which I also own and have compared together.
If you're looking for a bright and somewhat even midrange response from a guitar, especially for recording or playing live gigs then I highly recommend the Sierra. This guitar has no business being as cheap as it is for the quality. The workmanship is very good all throughout and I will almost certainly be buying their all mahogany guitar next.
We are so glad to hear that you are enjoying your Sierra!
It's a birthday gift for my husband (Halloween) who got your Oliver Mahogany last year and hasn't put it down since. Looking forward to hearing this one too!
I own a few other high end Taylors, and love them - but hardly play those anymore. Here's why. I bought my Sierra from a recent Scratch/Dent sale about 6 months ago. There is a slight stain around where the neck meets the top. Cosmetic blemish only. I bought this really out of curiosity and because it is an all solid guitar under $1000. Had to try it. This guitar (and this company) is something special. I play my Sierra every day. It's an instrument I typically start and end my day with. It is a joy to play, has an amazing balanced tone, and even with the blemish, a beautiful guitar. Thankful to find it and thankful to Orangewood for making it so cost accessible. I only wish now that I bought a new one with the electronics. Just would hate to part with this one. If you're a fan of the Concert size, I highly recommend giving the Sierra a serious look. Buying experience was also top notch!
This guitar has it all.. looks, sound etc… I have owned this instrament a week now and i could not be any happier , again it has the sound and playabillity of a more expensive guitar and I am going to buy another for my wife. Also I forgot to tell you the staff.are spot on
